Family Day Out

Family Day Out

Inveraray Jail is a great visitor attraction for the whole family, not just history enthusiasts.

See for yourself that often young children were tried, sentenced and imprisoned here in the Jail for the smallest of misdemeanours, for example stealing turnips.

There are plenty of 'hands on' experiences to try out such as stretching out in a hammock, lying on a hard wooden bed or being locked behind bars in the airing yards.

Turn the wheel of the hard labour Crank Machine or feel what it is like to be strapped to the Whipping Table.

The Jail’s staff are dressed in period costumes and are “in character” for the duration of your visit. Children love to role-play with the warder, matron and prisoners who bring the prison to life answering questions, describing life in the jail, and telling stories about jail and prisoner history.

On entry, children will receive a Parole Certificate and if they obtain four separate embossed stamps located around the Jail, they will achieve early release for good behaviour and a free gift!

Inveraray town is great place for all the family to explore after the centrepiece visit to the Jail. With excellent visitor attractions, shops to browse through and places to eat, there’s plenty to do to keep the family occupied for the whole day.
