Sample the Punishments
Discover for yourself some of the punishments used on prisoners at Inveraray Jail.
Have a go at turning the Crank Machine, a form of useless labour. Male prisoners had to turn the handle 14,400 times a day! The warder could make the task harder by tightening a screw, giving meaning to the slang word for prison warder, screw.
Try out on the Whipping Table, but make sure you know who is holding the birch! Whipping was punishment for boys and was meant to be ‘sufficiently severe to cause a repetition of it to be dreaded’.
